Choreography for Leipziger Tanztheater
A photo from Shanghai 1949 of Henri Cartier-Bresson served as inspiration for this piece. The image shows a huge crowd queuing up desperately, pushing and squeezing each other. The piece “Shanghai 49” plays around with the density of bodies, the discomfort of being unable to move due to the pressure of the other bodies around. It is about trying to defend one’s place and moving forward against or with the stream.
The choreography builds on those moments of density, being squeezed, escaping the crowd and being pulled back into it. It is all about the interrelation of moments of great physical presence and the appearance and disappearance of groups and individuals in space.
„Shanghai 49 gelingt bis auf einige Längen in der Mitte wunderbar. Ein Pulk Wartender wird zum Pulk Ängstlicher wird zu einem Pulk Drängelnder Körperteile, dann ganze Körper winden und zwängen sich heraus, unten drunter, oben drüber, zwischendurch. Spannend umgesetzte Wechsel von Verdichtung und Vereinzelung, Spiel und Stress, von Verfolgung, Zusammenballen, Auseinanderdriften und wieder Einfangen.“ (Leipziger Volkszeitung, 7. Oktober 2007)
